What's this "X" Stich All About?

Don't worry, we know you've been wondering (like a lot) about what the heck this X stitch really is. Like, isn't the V stitch good enough? Is there even a difference? On this post we'll (try) to answer all of your "X" stich queries because, there are some benefits to the X stitch, at least we think so. The truth behind all of the chaos and uncertainty is that is it truly up to your personal opinion and what you think suits your amigurumi character. So let's get into it!

So what exactly is the X stitch?

The X stitch is just a different way to do the single crochet for amigurumi. And don't stress - it's nothing fancy. Essentially all you are doing is yarning under instead of over on the first loop, and we'll talk about this later.

What's the difference?

By yarning under, each stitch is more in the shape of an "x" rather than your typical "v". The result is said to be something "neater" or more "organised", which many think will give a more professional finish. It can also increase the tension, with yarn, making the stuffing less visible inside.

Let's take a look:

There isn't really a huge difference, but you are able to notice how the second image (using the X stitch) seems more aligned and visibly pops out at you more. In contrast, the V stich seems a little more... dull? It doesn't cover much space, making it look a little less consistent, and it also risks the stuffing being seen. (Also note that we have marked the stitches with Vs and Xs if you were wondering.)

How do you do the X stitch?

If you can't see the different and are thinking that you totally aren't bothered to switch over that's totally fine. But if you are interested in using the X stitch, let's go through these steps...

  1. Do your magic rings and chains normally

  2.  When you are doing your first single crochet, insert your hook into the chain/stitch

  3. Pull your yarn through by YARNING UNDER.

  4. This will create 2 loops on your hook.

  5. Then YARN OVER and pull through the two loops

  6. Enjoy the X stitch??

See, there really isn't anything too it. (Oops, I think we worked it up a little too much at the start :P) I recommend following a pattern and making two different copies. The first with the V stich, the second with your X stitch, and see which you prefer.

Hope this helps!
